COURSE BREAKDOWN

Lesson 1 : Stability in Chaturanga Dandasana

Showing up over 50 times in the Primary Series, Chaturanga Dandasana is one of the most-practiced asanas in Ashtanga. This foundational pose helps you build the full-body strength needed for many other actions, asanas, and vinyasas, and you can start to gain the benefits as soon as you apply the teachings from this lesson to your practice. You’ll find modifications to help you access the pose and build strength as you progress too!

Lesson 2 : Jumping Back & Jumping Forward

The jumping vinyasas in Ashtanga may seem intimidating or inaccessible at first, but we believe anyone can do them! By determining your starting point, you’ll be able to approach this transitional movement with mindfulness and care as you slowly build up your strength. You’ll gain an understanding of the movements required in the body to complete the jumping action, with modifications and progressions to explore in your own practice, no matter where you are.

Lesson 3: Balancing in Bakasana

Cultivating more strength in your practice requires three important elements – lifting, balancing, and connection – and Bakasana so perfectly ties them all together. This lesson will help you feel how the work for this pose is done all throughout the body, it’s not just balancing! You’ll understand how to engage the core and keep the legs lifted, with modifications to try as you move toward the full expression of the pose. The actions in this pose are the perfect way to prepare your body for handstand too (that’s what David did)!

Thanks to them and their energy, you can improve or even learn Ashtanga from your home. The explanations of asana movements are precise; the tips and hints are so helpful. Jelena first came to yoga through dance. As a former ballet dancer of 16 years, the structure and rigour of the Ashtanga Yoga practice felt like home. Drawn to the discipline, mindfulness of the movement and emphasis on the breath, Jelena made the Ashtanga practice her sole focus in 2009.

Jelena has maintained a daily Ashtanga practice for over a decade. She’s made two trips to Mysore, India to study with her teacher, Sharath Jois.

Lastly, Jelena’s true passion lies in promoting rescue and adoption of (street) dogs. You can often find her sharing her love for #adoptdontshop on her IG, and sharing the joys of living with her two fur-babies, Boksoon and Khani, both celebrities in their own right.
